TANNERY WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Biotechnology - ten microorganisms from the treatment facility of biodegradable wastes from the CREST Training Center at Silang, Cavite and 14  from acid mines were  gram-stained, observed and identified.  Researchers noted a 25% reduction of iron in the wastewater samples from the laboratories of the University of Sto. Tomas.   Likewise, the use of microbial treatment referred to as bioremediation process was expected to provide technology option for tannery operations to be compliant with the chromium effluent standard required by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).   Chromium compounds from tannery wastes was reduced by 94-98%.  Non-environment-friendly processes in tannery operations serve as export barriers of leather products to Europe.
